PR-B season ends at Warroad

Tigers fall to Warriors 47-36

The Pine River-Backus boys basketball season came to an end on March 11 when the Tigers fell in a low scoring Section 8AA East Subsection game with the 18-6 and second-seeded Warroad Warriors. The Warriors controlled the opening tip-off and went on a 9-1 run before Ben Kline knocked down a 3-pointer off a Dylan Rice assist. Warroad scored inside but Jon Bristow hit a free throw and Kline drilled another 3-pointer off a dish by Rice, pulling PR-B within three points at 11-8.

The Warriors scored twice inside but missed on three straight trips to the charity stripe. Jordan Farmer hit a pair of free throws and Kline went end-to-end to score off his own steal, staying within five points at 17-12 at the break.

Warroad opened the second half with a 13-0 run before David Sullivan was able to score inside. The Warriors then pushed the lead to 18 points on a pair of inside buckets. Steve Gertken hit a 3-pointer and Bristow hit a jumper while Farmer hit a free throw and a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 37-25.

Rice then scored off his own steal and completed the old fashioned three-point play before going end-to-end off a steal and pulling within seven points at 37-30 with less than three minutes to play. The Warriors collected free throws before Bristow hit back-to-back jumpers. With the clock winding down Rice scored again but Warroad collected free throws to hold on for the 47-36 win.

Kline and Bristow scored eight points each to lead the Tigers. Rice finished with seven points, Farmer added six points, Gertken had five points and Sullivan had two points.

In spite of the low score, Warroad had three players finish in double figures. Adams led all scorers with 14 points, Wilmer had 11 points and Jack Phetsanghane had 10 points.

With the loss, PR-B closes a disappointing season with a 3-23 overall record.
